The rogue in Rogue Begonia
Thirty-five years of studying character traits, mannerisms, and the human mojo have served me well. I was neither police detective nor mystic, but I played them both as a licensed psychologist and executive coach. By helping business owners and executives cultivate their skills and realize their full potential, I also sharpened my own instincts and powers of observation.
I’ve loved my work, but I also wanted to learn something new. So, in 2014, I took a month off to play and learn a new skill. Naively, I attended a weeklong, plein air painting workshop on Madeline Island with a master painter. I came away with a new way of seeing and oil under my nails (that remains there still, metaphorically, of course). Since that baptism by fire, I’ve pursued every opportunity I could to learn the basics, hone my skills, and build a network of friends and fellow painters. And as in my coaching practice, I value keen observation, accurate interpretation, and reverence for the beauty of all things.
From there, an idea took root…
And a Rogue Begonia grows
I’m agnostic on subject matter to paint. I love studying the unique character of individuals with portrait work, the bold structures and subtle nuances of landscapes and light, and the abundant glories of the floral world.
I also wanted a setting to help bring it all to life. So, in January of 2020, (it’s all about timing), I opened Rogue Begonia - a creative gathering space for kindred spirits who aspire to learn, create, show, and share. This marked my official “now you’ve done it” step into my encore career as a painter and creative host.
I aspire to elevate and illuminate the subjects I paint and the people I greet here. I also seek to make Rogue Begonia a source of inspiration for all on their path to mastery.
Onward,
Abigail Barrett
